A Class 11 student in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra allegedly committed suicide after his mother did not come home for Karva Chauth, police said on Tuesday.
Shakuntala, the mother of the boy identified as Paras, had been living at her maternal home for about one and a half years after having a fight with her husband. She reportedly rejected her son’s request to return home on the occasion of Karva Chauth, due to which Paras took this drastic step, police added.
According to the family, Paras’s father, Manoj Kumar Shukla, who is a labourer, lived at his house with his 18-year-old son. Paras was suffering from depression for some time due to his mother’s absence and him not being able to talk to her. He had pleaded several times to talk to his mother and return home, but his mother ignored him.
On Sunday evening, Paras had dinner with his father and asked his mother to return home for Karwa Chauth, but she refused. Later that evening, Paras went to his room and killed himself by hanging himself from a ceiling fan, the police report added.
When his father returned home, he discovered his son hanging from the ceiling fan. He screamed and summoned his neighbours, who removed the boy’s body from the noose and took him to the nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.
After the postmortem, Paras’ body was sent home, but his mother Shakuntala did not even come to see him one last time.
People on the scene expressed amazement, calling the entire turn of events “very painful”.
Meanwhile, the police have registered a case and have launched an investigation into the matter.
